Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament Now Over 200,000

As of this morning, the Facebook group; Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament had a whopping 201,150 members. You can also sign a petition here, expressing your displeasure.

If you are wondering about where rallies are planned you can check out this site.

If you live in or near Kingston, Ontario; local Liberal Riding Association President Ron Hartling sent this information:

Saturday January 23rd from 12 noon to 1:00 pm: In collaboration with our NDP and Green counterparts, we are sponsoring a non-partisan Public Information Meeting on the Prorogation of Parliament in the Memorial room of Kingston City Hall. One of the main reasons why Mr. Harper was able to get away his “big lie” tactics when he last prorogued Parliament last year at this time is that Canadians by and large don’t understand how parliamentary democracy differs from the American system that is reflected in our media. By attending this session and asking questions of a distinguished panel featuring nationally-renowned parliamentary expert Dr. Ned Franks, you will be in a far better position to explain to others why they should be concerned by the nearly unfettered powers of a rogue prime minister who will shut down Parliament itself to evade its scrutiny.

Saturday January 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 pm: The Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament (Kingston Chapter) protest rally will be held in Market Square just behind City Hall. Almost 200,000 Canadians have already signed up to the Facebook group that is organizing similar rallies all across Canada. The more Liberals and other Kingstonians who participate in this peaceful rally, the stronger the message that Mr. Harper has finally gone too far in his disrespect for our system of government. If you come first to our noon information meeting, you will emerge warm and bolstered by a hot coffee just in time for the rally and with a better understanding of the issues.

Saturday January 23rd from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm: Whether or not you attend the meeting and/or the rally, please join us at Tir Nan Og for our first Liberal Get-Together. We hope that this will become a monthly opportunity for Kingston and area Liberals to get together in a relaxed, informal setting to meet with old friends, make new ones and generally shoot the breeze about politics and all other topics of mutual interest. We’ll be in the private Monte’s room which you get to be entering via the main entrance of the Prince George Hotel at 200 Ontario Street and turn left at the lobby.

Blogger Vive le Canada 1867, outlines why it was such a huge mistake to prorogue, what it was all about, and what bills were simply erased.

In essence, the Conservatives have demonstrated that the laws which govern our parliamentary system do not apply to them. Therefore, rather than being put to questions during parliamentary committees and producing documents which have been demanded by a parliamentary order, Stephen Harper has chosen to lock the doors of Parliament.

But even beyond the blatant disregard for parliamentary procedure, there is the issue of the unfinished business that this Conservative government is simply turning their back on.
